Fernando de Noronha is an archipelago of 21 islands and islets in the Atlantic Ocean, 354 km (220 mi) offshore from the Brazilian coast with an area of 26 km2 (10 sq mi).
The name is a corruption of the name of the Portuguese merchant Fernão de Loronha, to whom it was given by the Portuguese crown for services rendered rearding wood imported from Brazil. Only the homonymous main island is inhabited and his area is 18.4 km2 (7.1 sq mi) and a population estimated at 2,718 in 2012.
The archipelago of Fernando de Noronha is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with a delicate ecosystem. Visitors are restricted, but the lucky few are rewarded with unrivaled beaches and soothing warm waters filled with dolphins and sea turtles, making Noronha one of the world’s top diving destinations.
70% of the islands’ area were established in 1988 as a national maritime park.

How to get there?
Fernando de Noronha Island airport (FEN) was constructed in 1942. It can deal with big airplaine like Boeing 737. Its runway is 1,840 meters long. The airline companies “Gol Linhas Aéreas” and “Azul Brazilian Airlines” operate daily flights from two main hubs – Recife (REC) and Natal (NAT) – please check their site for more information.
